Playing Style

Erling Haaland possesses a number of qualities including speed, strength, positioning and finishing inside the box. He always attempts to play off the blindside of the defender and has been praised for being able to bamboozle the opposition and find space in the tightest of areas. He is frequently one step ahead of his marker, finding himself in a position to get a shot away. His ability to move back and forth makes it difficult for the defender to track his movement and quick changes of directions allow him to create a yard of space and attack the space in behind.

He wins a lot of aerial duals and is often arriving in the box at high speed, allowing him to jump higher than the opposition.

His game is based around movement and finishing and his record in the final third speaks for itself.

Goalscoring Record

Erling Haaland has broken all manner of goalscoring records throughout his career. He was the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga goals during his time at Borussia Dortmund and was the first teenager to score in five consecutive UEFA Champions League fixtures.

Since joining Manchester City, he’s scored 83 goals in 92 games and 26 in 29 UEFA Champions League fixtures. He scored within 18 minutes of making his Premier League debut and has already secured two Golden Boots since swapping Germany for the UK. He also became the fastest player to reach 50 goals (48 games), beating Andy Cole’s record by 17 matches!

He scored the most goals (52) across all competitions in one season since records began.

He scored 67 times in 67 appearances for Dortmund and 17 in 16 during his time at Salzburg.

He has represented Norway on several occasions, scoring 19 times in 16 Nations League appearances. Despite his exploits in the final third, he is yet to compete at a major international tournament.

What is the Ballon d’Or?

The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award which is given to the best performing male and female players in the professional game. It is considered to be the most prestigious and valuable award and has been given out every year since 1956. The inaugural winner was Stanley Matthews and the most recent recipient was Haaland’s Manchester City teammate Rodri. In 2022, the guidelines were tweaked and the award now reflects the achievements of players during the last football season as opposed to the calendar year.

The award has an inherent bias towards attacking players with Lionel Messi receiving the award on a record eight occasions. Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or on five occasions, yet he has been nominated on 15 occasions.

Although players and coaches were allowed to vote pre-2017, the recipient is now exclusively picked by a panel of sports journalists.

Will Erling Haaland Win the Ballon d’Or?

The Norwegian marksman has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or on numerous occasions and finished second behind Lionel Messi in 2023.

His performance levels has dipped in line with Manchester City loss of form and his side’s early exit from the Champions League is unlikely to help his cause in 2025. However, there is still plenty of time left in his career and at just 24-year olds, he has the chance to break plenty more goalscoring records. Haaland potentially has a decade left at the highest level and as long as he can remain fit and focused, he is likely to be in contention for the Ballon d’Or most seasons. 2025 is unlikely to be his season to triumph, however, there is reason to believe that the powerful frontman can add this accolade to his sizeable list of achievements.

If you believe that Erling Haaland will win the Ballon d’Or before retirement, you could win €135 by betting €100 if it happens.
