What is the Sixth Man of the Year Award?

The Sixth Man of the Year award is one of several annual honors handed out at the end of the regular NBA season. This award is given to the player who has made the most significant contribution coming off the bench as a substitute. Payton Pritchard is the favourite to win the 2024-25 Sixth Man of the Year. The Boston Celtics’ Guard has enjoyed an excellent season so far, scoring 20 or more points in four successive matches. He has slowly increased his contributions over the last couple of seasons including playing a pivotal role in the Celtics’ 2024 Championship run.

The former Oregon star has stepped up this season, averaging 14.1 points as well as 3.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game so far. He brings something different to the offense when coming off the bench and his ability to shoot threes has caught the eye. He’s currently shooting 42.2% percent from the three-point range.

He was selected as 26th overall pick at the 2020 Draft and has had to remain patient. He’s finally being allowed to showcase his abilities and the Celtics are reaping the rewards.

The Celtics have plenty of dynamism in the offense, yet Pritchard’s ability to quickly rack up the points has proven invaluable this season.

Other Contenders for Sixth Man of the Year

The Cavaliers’ De’Andre Hunter has been gaining ground in the race for the trophy. He has recently swapped Atlanta for Cleveland ahead of the trade deadline and although some analysts believe that this may hinder his chances of winning the race for Sixth Man, he should slot in nicely alongside Evan Mobley, Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell.

He is leading the way with an average of 18.9 points per game, but it remains to be seen whether he can retain his form for the Cavs.

Amen Thompson has been slowly moving up the list of Sixth Man of the Year candidates having enjoyed a promising rookie campaign. His stats have improved across the season and has nearly doubled his three-point percentage over the last twelve months.

There are also a number of new faces who are hoping to secure their first NBA honor. The likes of Santi Aldama of the Grizzlies, the Cavs’ Ty Jerome and Spencer Dinwiddle of the Mavericks have all made a positive impression in recent weeks and have to be considered.
