Will Mateo Retegui Finish the Season as Serie A’s Top Goalscorer?
Serie A is Italy’s top flight football competition and is generally regarded as one of the best professional leagues in the world. It is considered one of the big five European divisions and features iconic teams such as Inter Milan, Juventus, Lazio, Napoli and AC Milan.
The winners of Serie A are awarded the Scudetto (the Coppa Campioni d’Italia Trophy). Other than La Liga, more players have won the Ballon d’Or whilst competing in Serie A than any other division. The division attracted a reputation for being tactical and defensive in the early-2000s, however, recent seasons have dispelled this belief with the 2023-24 campaign averaging 2.61 goals per game.
The BEO betting odds show that there is a 33.33% chance that Mateo Retegui will finish as top goalscorer in Serie A this season::: Discover the current Odds now HEREÂ

As of February 2025, Napoli lead the way and sit top of Serie A. The Partenopei are desperate to put last season’s underwhelming campaign firmly behind them and pick up their second title in three seasons. Lazio are surprisingly sat in second place with the two Milan rivals sat directly behind them in the standings. Atalanta have been recently dumped out of Europe and can put all of their efforts into their Scudetto bid whilst Roma have been revitalised under Claudio Ranieri.
Although some free-scoring players do tend to play for mid-table outfits, the majority of the candidates for top goalscorer tend to be employed by one of the top six sides. If a player starts the season in prolific fashion, then he is likely to be snapped up by one of the bigger teams in Serie A.
Previous Top Goalscorers
Scudetto winners Inter were free-scoring last season and their Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez finished top of the charts with 24 goals. Surprisingly, this is the first time that he has won the Paolo Rossi Award, matching the achievements of fellow countrymen Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi. Higuain is the joint-highest goalscorer in the history of the division having plundered 36 goals for Napoli during the 2015-16 campaign.

Mateo Retegui leads the way and is enjoying a stellar season for Atalanta. La Dea may not be top of Serie A, however, they are the joint-highest goalscorers (59) alongside Inter at the time of writing. The San Fernando-born striker is in his first season in Bergamo having been snapped up for 28million from Genoa. He’s fired in 21 goals in his first 24 appearances including four against Hellas Verona. He’s also netted in the Champions League this season. He is renowned for his efficiency and clinical finishing and with Atalanta now able to solely focus on domestic matters, he is likely to continue firing them in.
His teammate Ademola Lookman is an outside contender for the trophy and will be hoping to add more goals to his current total of 12.
Moises Kean has been Fiorentina’s leading marksmen in an up-and-down season for La Viola. They haven’t been able to find any consistency and heading into March, they’ve lost seven of their last twelve. Nevertheless, Kean’s 15 goals have given the fans something to cheer and his strength and speed has proven to be a nightmare for opposition defenders.
Inter are always likely to score goals and although they’ve been shared around this season, Marcus Thuram is easily their most dangerous asset. He’s netted 13 times so far this season and although he trails Mateo Retegui in the race for the Paolo Rossi Trophy, he 27-year old always looks dangerous in the final third. Last season’s winner Lautaro Martinez has ten goals so far.
If you believe that Moises Kean will finish as the top goalscorer in Serie A this season, you could win €750 by betting €100 if it happens.
