The Calder Trophy is an annual accolade which is awarded to the NHL Rookie of the Year. It is named after the NHL’s first president, Frank Calder. The award is handed out at the end of the regular season and is voted for by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, who compile their top five candidates using a 10-7-5-3-1 points system. Rookies must have featured in a minimum of 25 regular season games in order to be eligible for the prize.

2024-25 NHL Season
The 2024-25 NHL season got underway at the beginning of October 2024 in the Czech Republic as part of the NHL Global Series. Throughout the course of the campaign, each of the 32 franchises will play 82 matches. The regular season will conclude on April 17th 2025 and will be followed by the end-of-season play-offs.
Notable amendments to the current season include the 4-Nations Face Off tournament, which will replace the All-Star fixture. This mid-season tournament will be held in mid-February in Boston and Montreal and will feature four teams representing players from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the USA. The salary cap ceiling was also increased ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.
Previous Winners of the Calder Trophy
The first winner of the Calder Trophy was Carl Voss of the Detroit Red Wings. Throughout the 1940s, the Toronto Maple Leafs dominated NHL and a number of their rookies including Gaye Stewart, Gus Bodnar and Frank McCool all picking up the award.

Many winners of the Calder Trophy have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame including Tony Esposito, Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy. Peter Stastny of the Quebec Nordiques was the first winner of the 1980s.
There are a number of active NHL players who have enjoyed hugely successful careers after picking up the Calder Trophy including the record-breaking Alexander Ovechkin. Evgeni Malkin, Patrick Kane and Tyler Myers also enjoyed successful debut seasons.
Recent winners of the trophy include Cale Makar, Moritz Seider and Connor Bedard, who was deemed Rookie of the Year for the 2023-24 season.

Born in North Vancouver, Macklin Celebrini is currently plying his trade as centre for the San Jose Sharks. The 18-year old is dymanic and skillful and is considered to be the best draft-year college player to be drafted in the history of the franchise. At 17, he became the first player to win the Hobey Baker award as the top player in the NCAA.
He’s scored 17 in his first 43 appearances this season and was named Rookie of the Month for November. Although he’s missed 12 games through injury, he’s enjoyed a terrific first season in NHL and became the youngest player in the Sharks’ history to secure a three-point game during the regular season.
With 17 goals, 22 assists and 39 points in 43 games, he has made an instant impression during his first four months and is the leading contender for this season’s Calder Trophy.
Other Candidates
Lane Hutson has made a stellar start for the Canadiens and was named Rookie of the Month for December. The 20-year old defenseman accrued 13 points in his first 14 outings and claimed two separate five-point streaks.
Goalkeeper Dustin Wolf is firmly on the Calder Trophy shortlist with a 2.50 goals against record so far this season. The last goaltender to pick up the award came back in 2008-09 and the last five goalies to pick up the award have been averaging 2.29 goals against, suggesting that Wolf may just miss out on the award this time around.
Matvel Michkov has enjoyed a decent start to life in the NHL, although the 20-year old winger averaged a point per game at the start of the season, his form has dipped slightly in recent weeks.
