Noah Lyles claimed the title of “fastest man alive” in Paris last summer when claiming an Olympic gold medal in the 100m. His victory, which was recorded by just 0.05 seconds, produced one of the tightest finishes in the history of the sport, and the US sprinter produced an extraordinary burst of pace to record a personal best time of just 9.79 seconds. Who is Noah Lyles?
Noah Lyles is a track and field sprinter who was born in Gainesville, Florida. He competes over multiple distances – 60m, 100m and 200m and is the three-time champion in both 100m and 200m. At the 2023 World Championship in Budapest, he completed the sprint treble with victories in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay.

He’s also represented the USA on numerous occasions, succeeding at 2021 US Olympic Trials in Oregon. In 2024, he competed over the 60m at the USATF Championships, winning gold in a time of 6.43 seconds.
In 2023, he was awarded the Men’s World Athlete of the Year and was also nominated for the 2024 Laureus Sportsman of the Year.

Tyreek Hill is a wide receiver who plays for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. The 30-year old played college football for Oklahoma State and West Alabama before being picked up at the 2016 NFL Draft, After five years with the Kansas City Chiefs, he switched to Miami. He’s endured a frustrating season with the Dolphins and has been linked with a potential trade to the Washington Commanders.
He was the Super Bowl champion in 2019 as the Chiefs came back to win 31-20 against the 49ers. Hill caught nine passes for 105 yards and was ranked 22nd in the Top 100 Players of 2020.
He made his second Super Bowl appearance in 2020, however, he found himself on the losing side as the Buccaneers triumphed 31-9 at the Raymond James ‘ Stadium.
In his younger days, Hill was a successful sprinter and was a USA Today All-American track and field selection in 2012. He ran a wind-assisted 9.98 seconds in the 100 metres at the 2013 Hutchinson NJCCA Championships.
Why are they Competing?
The pair have playfully sparred and a social-media rivalry has been created between the pair as a result. Fans have enjoyed the back-and-forth and we may now finally get to witness the pair go head-to-head. Following his victory at the New Balance Grand Prix, Lyles held up a sign saying ‘Tyreek Could Never’. The pair has subsequently spoken on the phone and they are adamant that the race WILL happen.
A date has yet to be set for the race, however, the early suggestions are that it may be scheduled for later this summer.
Neither competitor is likely to back down with Hill suggesting that Lyles ‘should be scared of him’.
From Lyles’ perspective, he is hoping that this unusual battle between the pair would bring more coverage to his sport outside of the major events. He is hoping to keep track and field sports relevant and attract a new, and potentially younger audience to Athletics.
