Carlo Ancelotti has overseen a tremendously successful period at the club and he has recently extended his contract until 2026. Who is Xabi Alonso?
Xabi Alonso is the Spanish manager who is currently in charge of Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The former midfielder guided them to an unlikely title success last season and is widely considered to be one of the best young managers in the professional game. He managed to guide the unfancied outfit to an unprecendented unbeaten domestic double and was one game away from securing a European trophy. He has been strongly linked with a number of high-profile clubs including Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
He spent a successful spell at the Bernabeu during his playing career. He made 158 appearances and was a hugely popular figure in the dressing room. Prior to moving to Real Sociedad, he also coached Real Madrid’s U14 team and has a strong association with the club.
He is noted for his top class communication skills and although he is regarded as a fairly quiet character away from the game, he is extremely intense on the training pitch and will demand the highest standards from his players.

Raul is the second favourite for the role. He is currently in charge of Real Madrid’s second team – Real Madrid Castilla. They are currently in the Primera Federacion – Group 2, although they are currently struggling down the wrong end of the table. He made over 700 appearances for Los Blancos and scored 323 goals. He would be a popular appointment with the fans, yet his management credentials, particularly at the top level, are yet to be proven.
Mikel Arteta, who is very good friends with Xabi Alonso, has also been linked with the role. Although he hasn’t been able to deliver much silverware, he has undoubtedly improved Arsenal and he is a manager who is viewed as a long-term appointment and would oversee the development of key players.
Alvaro Arbeloa was renowned for his leadership qualities on the field and he is an interesting contender for the top job. Once again, he would need to be promoted from within as he is currently in charge of Real Madrid Juvenil A.
Antonio Conte isn’t the most straightforward characters and his personality might not be compatible for the club. His intense and erratic mood swings may cause a few issues in the camp. Nevertheless, he has enjoyed success in both Italy and the UK and is held in high esteem.
