Could Australia Win Eurovision in 2025?

In October 2024, SBS confirmed Australia will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025.

The national broadcaster announced the news at its annual Upfronts event when revealing its 2025 TV schedule at the Sydney Opera House.

The participation will mark 10 years in the competition, as Australia received special permission to enter, as it isn’t a full EBU member.

The country’s participation in 2015 was meant to be a one-off experience, but it has competed every year since.

Australia has yet to win the event, but it has proven popular with audiences since its debut, and 2025 could be its year.

Has Australia Ever Won Eurovision?

Australia hasn’t won the Eurovision Song Contest yet. However, the country is popular with voters, as it has placed in the top ten five times over a nine-year period.

The country enjoyed its best result in 2016, as “Sound of Silence” by Dami Im helped Australia secure second place in the much-loved music competition.

Its next best performance was in 2015, as Guy Sebastian’s “Tonight Again” helped Australia receive a fifth-place finish.  Also, its 2017, 2019, and 2023 entrants finished in ninth place.

Qualification Failure

Despite entering the event every year since 2015, Australia failed to qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024.

Electronic Field’s “One Milkali (One Blood)” finished in 11th place in the semi-final after earning 41 points, resulting in Australia missing out on the final.

Of course, Australia’s participation doesn’t mean it will make it through to the final. For the country to stand a chance in the competition, it must make it through the semi-finals, which are scheduled for May 13 and 15, 2025, and the final will be held on May 17, 2025.

A total of 38 countries will participate in the competition, but only one will win the event this year.

Australia’s Biggest Eurovision Rivals

Only 27 countries out of 52 have won the Eurovision Song Contest, meaning 24 have yet to win the event, and Australia is one of them.

At present, Sweden and Ireland have enjoyed the most success in the international music competition, as they have won seven times each.

France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg are close behind, with five wins each.

At present, Belgium is tipped to win the event this year, but Ukraine and last year’s winner, Sweden, are strong contenders, as they have both won the competition three times within the last ten years.

If Sweden wins the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025, it will be the second time the country has secured three consecutive wins.

Who Will Represent Australia in 2025?

For Australia to win, they may need a big star to encourage international audiences to vote in their favor.

For this reason, many Aussies are hoping some big names will represent Australia in 2025. For example, Delta Goodrem could appeal to many voters, as she has enjoyed international success since the early 2000s and secured five top ten UK singles.

Many believe Sheppard could be the right choice for 2025, as the band lost out as the Australian entry to Electric Fields in 2024.

As Dami In represented Australia in 2016, finishing as the runner-up, she might have the best shot at helping the country win the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time.

If you believe Australia will win the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, you could win $3400 by betting $100 at 1xBet if it happens.
