The Australian Open gets underway on January 12th, 2025, at Melbourne Park. It is the first of the four Grand Slam events on the tennis calendar, and the tournament often takes place in sweltering conditions. What happened in 2024?
Jannik Sinner, who defeated the defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, was the eventual winner of the 2024 Australian Open. The Italian clinched his first major title by beating Daniil Medvedev in an absorbing five-set contest. His victory was highly memorable with the 23-year-old returning from a two-set deficit to clinch victory.
The Women’s final was far more straightforward with Aryna Sabalenka beating China’s Zheng Qinwen in straight sets 24 hours earlier.
Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev were both knocked out in the semi-finals whereas Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev exited at the quarter final stage.
Coco Gauff and Dayana Yastremska were knocked out in the semi-finals.
Recent Winners of the Australian Open
Although Jannik Sinner was successful in 2024, this tournament has been dominated by Novak Djokovic over the last couple of decades. He was successful in 2023 and also secured three consecutive victories between 2019 and 2021. He also won in both 2015 and 2016. Other recent winners include Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal with Stan Wawrinka also triumphing in 2014.
Serena Williams has enjoyed plenty of success in Melbourne with the American picking up top honours in 2007. 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2017. Other recent winners include Sofia Kenin, Caroline Wozniacki, Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber. Ashleigh Barty was a hugely popular winner with the Australian triumphing on her own patch back in 2022.
Who are the Favourites in 2025?
Reigning champion Jannik Sinner is the understandable favourite to clinch back-to-back victories down under. The Italian is currently ranked as the world number one and has won 18 titles on the ATP Tour so far. He was victorious at the ATP Finals in November and will be keen to continue where he left off at the end of 2024.
Carlos Alcaraz enjoyed a tremendous twelve months and the 21-year-old is expected to get even better in 2025. He already has four titles to his name alongside 16 titles on the ATP Tour. Although he will have been disappointed with the final few months of 2024, he tends to start the year strongly and will be expecting to improve on last year’s semi-final elimination.
Novak Djokovic has struggled with injuries lately, yet he loves playing at this tournament and cannot be ruled out. The Serb has won five of the last seven Australian Open titles and will surely be keen to extend his excellent record here.
Russian Daniil Medvedev reached the final of the Grand Slam event last season and will be seeking revenge. He is yet to triumph at the first major of the season, however, he has reached the final on three occasions. losing to three different opponents in the process.
At 10/1, Alexander Zverev cannot completely be discounted from consideration. The world number two has been runner-up at two Grand Slams including the 2024 French Open, yet the 27-year-old is yet to record his first success at one of these events.
It’s not a huge surprise see the two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka leading the betting for the Women’s Australian Open title in 2025. She was voted the 2024 Player of the Year and has three major titles to her name. She has reached the final four in six of her last eight Grand Slam appearances.
Iga Swiatek remains a prominent figure in the women’s game and is likely to give a good account of herself. She is the only Polish player to have clinched a Grand Slam title and she’s enjoyed plenty of success at Roland Garros. She is yet to reach the final of the Australian Open and was surprisingly knocked out in the third round at the 2024 tournament.
Coco Gauff has been one of the breakout players of the last five years and has reached number two in the WTA rankings. She started 2024 strongly with semi-final appearances at the first two Grand Slams, however, she ended the season relatively poorly.
