What is the MVP?
The MVP is an annual award given to the NFL player considered to be the most valuable asset in the league during the regular season. Various entities, including the Associated Press and the Pro Football Writers of America, make the decision each year alongside a 50-strong panel of broadcasters and sportswriters who have reported on and written about the NFL.
The award is given out alongside numerous other accolades. A separate Superbowl MVP will also be awarded following the culmination of the season in February. Since 2011, there has been a dedicated NFL Honors ceremony which recognises the MVP and the achievements of top-performing players.
The first MVP award – officially listed as the Joe. F. Carr Trophy was handed out in 1938 to Mel Hein. It has taken on various forms including the Jim Thorpe Trophy and the Sporting News MVP.
Previous Winners
Mel Hein may have been the first player to win the award, however, Don Hutson was the first player to clinch back-to-back MVP awards in 1941/42.
Other notable players to have won the award including Jim Brown (1957,58 and 65), O J Simpson (1973), Ken Anderson (1981), Brett Favre (1995/96), Peyton Manning (2004), Tom Brady (2007,10, 17) and Lamar Jackson (2019, 23).
The MVP award is usually handed out to players who make the end-of-season play-offs with O J Simpson the last player to turn out for a team who failed to make the cut. Despite the Bills’ failure, O J Simpson caught the eye and was awarded the top honour.
Lamar Jackson is the current holder with the quarterback adding to his impressive haul of trophies.
Who are the 2024 MVP Candidates?
Lamar Jackson is in contention once again alongside Josh Allen. Jackson has 27 touchdown passes, tied first in NFL and is leading the NFL in the majority of Quarter-back metrics. He helped the Ravens to a record of 8-4, however, their loss to the Ravens was a hammer blow to his chances of going back-to-back.
Although Jackson’s performance was solid enough, the Ravens looked disjointed going forward and questions have been asked about his ability to carry his side through the end-of-season quagmire. Unfortunately, he’s produced two underwhelming displays in three weeks and will need to up his game going forward.
Josh Allen has thrown 27 touchdowns so far and his performance against the 49ers at the end of November further underlined his credentials for MVP. He achieved a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game, becoming the first to achieve such a feat in NFL history. He’s also completed 13-of-17 passes for 148 yards and has managed to achieve this feat without much of a supporting cast.
Saquon Barkley has propelled the Eagles through October and November as they’ve put together an impressive unbeaten streak. Only four running backs have won MVP since 2000 with Barkley currently on course to supercede all four previous winners. At the time of writing, He has 345 carries for 2,151 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. He is currently projected to break the all-time single season rushing record.
Jarod Goff finally won a Thanksgiving game at the end of November as the Lions saw off the Bears. Although there is a debate over whether Goff is an elite level QB, his impact this season is undisputed with the Lions opening the season with a 10-1 record. They’ve been dominant so far this season and Goff has been instrumental in their rise.
