Liverpool FC are one of the most celebrated and illustrious football teams on the planet with the Reds’ colossal fanbase extending to over 100 countries. The Reds also have a rich history of success with 19 league titles and eight FA Cup titles to their name so far. Premier League Title Race
As we’ve previously highlighted, Liverpool have a comfortable advantage at the summit. The Reds have taken 42 points from their opening seven matches and have played fewer games than Arsenal, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, all occupying the four spots directly below.
The Reds have a relatively straightforward start to 2025 with matches, although a trip to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest on January 14th could be a relatively tough assignment. Their first notable test of 2025 is a trip to the Etihad Stadium in mid-February.
Arsenal are viewed as the most likely challengers with the Gunners having averaged two points per game so far. Mikel Arteta’s men look far more balanced following the return of Martin Odegaard, however, Bukayo Saka’s lengthy spell on the sidelines is a significant blow to their title bid.
Chelsea’s form has dropped off recently, yet the Blues have a talented squad and the irrepressible Cole Palmer leading the charge. The West Londoners may be hampered by their progress in the Europa Conference League with Thursday night fixtures providing a disadvantage to Enzo Maresca’s men.
The Premier League title race could be affected by a number of factors including the January Transfer Window. The Reds have been linked with a swoop for England international Marc Guehi with the Crystal Palace defender likely to improve their back-line during the second half of the campaign.
Progress in the Champions League may also impact the schedules. At the time of writing, both Liverpool and Arsenal will progress to the next stage of the competition, however, should either side reach the final, this may affect their performance levels and squad availability.
FA Cup
It’s still very early days in the FA Cup with the third round of the competition set to take place in January. The scrapping of replays will help to ease fixture congestion and Liverpool are expected to progress to the latter stage of the iconic knock-out competition.
Whilst title rivals Arsenal will have to negotiate a tricky tie against Manchester United, Liverpool have been handed a home tie against League Two strugglers Accrington Stanley.
League Cup
Liverpool have reached the semi-final stage of the League Cup and have the kindest possible draw. With Arsenal facing in-form Newcastle, the Reds will take on Spurs across two legs at the beginning of 2025. Having already seen off Ange Postecoglu’s leaky North Londoners, Arne Slot will fancy dishing out a repeat of the 6-3 mauling at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With a victory highly likely, the Merseyside outfit may find themselves just one game away from their first trophy of the season.
Champions League
Although the new format of the Champions League could catch out a few teams, Liverpool have made a terrific start to the competition and have a flawless record so far. The Reds have won all six games and have conceded just a single goal despite facing Real Madrid and Leverkusen, the La Liga and Bundesliga champions. They will face Lille and PSV in January and will be expected to take maximum points from both fixtures.
