Will the EU Ban Tesla’s Cybertruck?
Will the EU Ban Tesla’s Cybertruck?
Tesla’s futuristic and angular Cybertruck pickup has garnered attention worldwide since its unveiling in 2019. It’s shown up in many countries, even in Ukraine, as a favored vehicle of the Chechen leader, Ramzan Kadyrov – although it was later remotely disabled. However, its unique stainless steel exterior design has raised concerns among European road safety advocates who claim the vehicle does not meet EU vehicle standards. As Cybertrucks begin appearing on European streets, the debate heats up over whether the electric truck should be banned across the region.
Safety Concerns Over Sharp Angles
A key point of contention is the Cybertruck’s sharp angles and flat surfaces, which some believe could cause greater harm to pedestrians in collisions compared to curved conventional car designs. Safety groups argue that the Cybertruck’s metallic exterior and lack of crumple zones exacerbate injury risks.
In a letter to the European Commission, NGO Transport & Environment stated that “very oversized pickup trucks are now being increasingly imported and bringing danger to our streets.” They call for vehicles like the Cybertruck that “seriously conflict” with EU safety norms to be taken off roads until they can be properly reviewed.
The Cybertruck in Europe Today
While not officially available for purchase yet in Europe, a few Cybertrucks have made appearances on European streets. One truck registered in the Czech Republic has drawn scrutiny from watchdogs about whether it meets regulations. The vehicle received special individual approval with some modifications like added edges to reduce sharpness. However, groups claim the 4-tonne truck still exceeds the region’s 3.5-tonne weight limit for vehicles requiring speed limiters when loaded.

So far, Czech authorities believe their individual national registration allows the vehicle to operate, but the ability to drive such trucks across EU borders remains ambiguous. The owner of the Czech Cybertruck claims the car meets local interpretations of regulations. Nonetheless, regulatory confusion persists about the truck’s approval process and compliance.
Need for a European Cybertruck
With the distinct possibility of bans or registration issues, an adapted Cybertruck designed specifically for Europe appears necessary. Elon Musk has hinted at a redesigned “international” variant better tailored for other markets like Europe. A smaller, more compact Cybertruck with softened angles could help assuage safety concerns while boosting appeal abroad.
Regulatory and design tweaks seem inevitable for the Cybertruck to gain acceptance in Europe without significant pushback. But as many would expect, Musk shows limited signs of willingness to dramatically change the vehicle’s styling. For now, the Cybertruck’s future in Europe hangs in limbo until Tesla makes the product’s regulatory status and design more palatable to regional authorities.
The unique Cybertruck represents a bold vision of the future from Tesla. However, for this futuristic truck to succeed globally, Tesla will need to reconcile its radical looks with the world’s varied vehicle regulations. With compromise and ingenuity, Tesla may find a path to bring its stainless steel beast to Europe safely and legally.
