Will Cal Kestis Appear in Star Wars: Outlaws?

Star Wars: Outlaws is the open world action-adventure game from Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games. Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Outlaws features a new protagonist named Kay Vess – a wisecracking morally gray antihero trying to survive in the criminal underworld, alongside her pet, Nix.

With Outlaws being the first open world Star Wars game, many fans were curious as to whether it would include cameos or appearances from other established characters in the franchise. Specifically, some have speculated about Cal Kestis, protagonist of the recent Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor games, making an appearance.

Who is Cal Kestis?

Cal Kestis has become a fan favorite character over the two Jedi games, so naturally fans are curious if he could cross over into Outlaws. The potential is there, since Outlaws takes place around 3-4 years after the events of Survivor in the Star Wars timeline. As long as Cal survives the events of Survivor, he would theoretically still be alive during Outlaws.

A New Creative Direction?

However, Cal’s inclusion ultimately comes down to the creative direction Ubisoft wants to take. The developers may want Outlaws to focus squarely on establishing its new protagonist Kay Vess without cameos distracting from her story. Or they may embrace opportunities to connect Outlaws to the broader Star Wars universe.

According to official information on the game released so far, Outlaws will focus on Kay Vess’ adventures as she gets caught up with criminal syndicates after stealing a ship. The publicity has not indicated Cal Kestis will be part of the story. This suggests the developers want to keep the spotlight on Kay Vess.

Cal Kestis Isn’t a Good Fit for the Outlaws’ World

Thematically, Cal Kestis does not seem like an obvious fit for Outlaws’ criminal underworld setting either. As a Jedi, Cal has been portrayed as heroic and duty-bound – the opposite of the morally questionable outlaws that Kay Vess associates with. While a cameo is possible, Cal starring prominently in Outlaws would be tonally inconsistent.

Fun New Cameos On The Cards

That said, the Star Wars franchise loves connecting different mediums through cameos and references. It wouldn’t be surprising for Cal to briefly appear or even just be name-dropped to reinforce Outlaws’ place in the Star Wars timeline. But major roles seem unlikely for Cal.

In the end, fans will have to wait for more story details on Outlaws to know if Cal Kestis will join the ride. The safe bet based on current information seems to be Outlaws sticking with new outlaw leads rather than prominently featuring established Jedi heroes like Cal Kestis. But a minor cameo or reference to reward knowledgeable fans can’t be ruled out either. We’ll find out if Cal appears when Outlaws releases in 2024.
