Which NHL Records will Alexander Ovechkin Break This Season?
Who is Alexander Ovechkin?
Alexander Ovechkin is a Russian-born NHL player who currently plays for the Washington Capitals. The 39-year-old is nicknamed ‘The Great 8’ and is generally viewed as one of the game’s greatest scorers of all time. He began his career in his native Russia at Dynamo Moscow before becoming the Capital’s first overall pick at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
During his inaugural season in Washington, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year, scoring 52 goals and claiming 54 assists. He made his first NHL All-Star appearance at the end of the 2005-06 campaign. He led the Capitals to their very first Stanley Cup in 2018.
He has also represented Russia on multiple occasions. His first senior tournament was the 2004 World Championship, and he has also played at the World Cup.
Ovechkin is in the minority having spent his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals. This is a rare feat in the modern-day era.

Alexander’s Record in NHL
The Russian’s record in NHL is absolutely outstanding and although recent injuries have prevented him from playing reguarly, there is still plenty of time for Ovechkin to add to his numbers.
He is on the verge of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record of 894 and is expected to surpass this total at some stage in the next 12 months. He currently holds the NHL’s record for the highest number of 40-goal seasons with a total of 13 and has been awarded the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, which is given to NHL’s leading scorer each season, a record nine times. Ovechkin doesn’t stop there. He’s also surpassed the 50-goal barrier on nine occasions which is another record breaking achievement.
Furthermore, the Russian superstar holds the record for the most power-play goals (316) and has had more shots on goal (6,690) than any other player.
He has previously been listed as one of NHL’s 100 Greatest Players of All Time.
2024-25 Season and Injuries
Ovi endured a disappointing 2023-24 season, by his own standards, with just 31 goals. That was comfortably his lowest career total and many NHL fans predicted his inevitable decline.
He also made an uncharacteristically slow start to this campaign, failing to notch in his first three games of the season. However, the Russian was simply taking his time and he scored five times in his next six appearances before powering through November with 10 goals in 9 games followed by a further five goals across two mid-month fixtures.
Unfortunately, Ovechkin picked up an injury against the Utah Hockey Club in mid-November and the diagnosis suggests that he will be out of action for four to six weeks.
What NHL Records is he Still Looking to Break?
Despite his latest setback, Ovi is still expected to surpass Gretzky’s record of 894 goals. At the time of writing, he has a total of 868 and once he gets back to playing regularly, he is likely to score the 26 goals required. He is 1.07 with 1xbet to achieve this goal.
He is also within touching distance of Joe Sakic’s total points record of 1641 and will also be aiming to beat Jaromir Jagr’s game-winning goals record of 135 in NHL regular championships.
Furthermore, he remains in contention to beat Sydney Crosby’s points record in NHL. However, he still has a little way to go and with both players in their late 30s and still featuring semi-regularly at the top level, the 42 points gap between the pair is unlikely to be bridged this season.
If you believe that Alexander Ovechkin will score 1000 goals in NHL (including Play-Offs), you could win €290 by betting €100 at 1xBet if it happens.
