The Last Journey follows Filip and Frederik, who directed the documentary, on a trip to France with Filip’s father, Lars Hammar.

Their hope is the trip will ignite a spark of life in Filip’s father after he retired after 40 years of teaching at Köping. As Lars has become more passive in his ways since retirement, the duo believe the road trip will add more passion and excitement to his life.

Father and son embark on the same journey the family often made during Filip’s childhood, but this time, they have his best friend Frederik by their side.

When Was The Last Journey Released?

The Last Journey premiered on March 1, 2024, in Swedish theaters and then at a screening at the 52nd Norwegian International Film Festival in August 2024. Since then, the documentary has been screened in movie theaters across Finland, Denmark, and Norway.

Could The Last Journey Win an Oscar?

It is difficult to predict who will receive a nomination for Best International Feature Film, as the category will face much competition from countries across the globe.

What’s more, 13 films have been nominated in the prestigious category, with the last flick being Ruben Ostlund’s The Square in 2017. Also, Ostlund’s flick Triangle of Sadness received a nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay in 2023.

However, fans of the documentary will need to wait patiently until January 17, 2025, to see if The Last Journey has received a nomination for Best International Film at the 97th Academy Awards.
