Will Oasis Record a New Album?

Will Oasis Record a New Album?

Oasis are a hugely popular rock band from Manchester in the UK who originally formed in 1991. They were a major player in the 1990s Brit-Pop scene which also featured rivals Blur, Pulp, Elastica and Cast amongst others. The band are led by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, both of whom are famously outspoken in the media. They are joined by Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs, Paul McGuigan and Tony McCarroll.

They topped the UK singles chart with their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe and have sold millions of records worldwide. The band famously disbanded in 2009 with both Liam (Beady Eye) and Noel Gallagher (High Flying Birds) having embarked on solo projects in recent years.

Why are Oasis so Popular?

Oasis’ sound is heavily inspired by the Beatles. Their 1960s-inspired melodies are radio-friendly and their lyrics are fairly relatable. The brothers are rarely out of the media spotlight and always have an opinion and they carry themselves with a certain swagger. Furthermore, they are excellent live performers and rarely disappoint when it comes to playing in front of mass audiences.

Their songs are timeless and catchy and Liam Gallagher’s unique vocal delivery is incredibly difficult to replicate.

Liam and Noel’s supposed ‘working class’ upbringing is also part of their charm and the band have always marketed themselves as a voice of the people – particularly in the north of England. They have a rustic down-to-earth charm about them that makes them incredibly relatable. They have a prominent place in the landscape of British music.

Previous Albums

Oasis’ debut album Definitely Maybe was released in August 1994 and was released on Creation Records. Helped the early release of the singles Shakermaker and Live Forever, the album went straight in at number one in the UK album charts. It went 9x platinum and was also a huge success in the US, a market that many British bands at the time had struggled to infiltrate.

It received widespread critical acclaim and was voted as the greatest album of all time by readers of NME magazine.

(What’s the Story) Morning Glory was the follow-up album and was released in October 1995. It was a significant departure from the debut album with the album containing a number of slower ballads such as Champagne Supernova, yet the big sing-along anthemic choruses remained intact. It sold a record-breaking 345,000 copies in its first week of release and featured best-selling singles Don’t Look Back in Anger and Roll with It.

Despite its commercial success, this album wasn’t as universally praised as Oasis’ debut record.

Oasis’ third album Be Here Now was released in August 1997 and was the last album to feature all of the original members of the band. It contained the singles Stand by Me, All Around the World and D’You Know What I Mean. It topped the abum chart in 15 different countries and was the fastest selling album in British history.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants was released in 28th February 2000 and was the first release on Big Brother Recordings. It also saw a change of sound which veered towards a more psychedelic output. Despite this, it was the 16th fastest selling album in the UK chart history. This was followed by Heathen Chemistry in 2002 which was the first album recorded with Andy Bell and Gem Archer. It was also the last album to feature drummer Alan White. Singles included Songbird, Little by Little and the Hindu Times.

Album number six was Don’t Believe the Truth which was released in 2005 and despite the popularity of the band seemingly beginning to cool, it still reached number one in the UK. Lead single Lyla was followed by the Importance of Being Idle.

Oasis’ final album was Dig Out Your Soul which was released in October 2008, a year before the band officially broke up. It was a commerical success and was praised for its harder rock sound. Shock of the Lightning was the lead single from this album and was followed by I’m Outta Time.

Why Would Oasis Release a New Album Now?

In August 2024, Oasis announced that they were reforming and were set to embark upon a full tour of UK and Ireland. Following years of speculation about whether Noel and Liam Gallagher would be able to put their differences aside and reunite, the news was greeted with mass enthusiasm and the news of their reunion made headline news around the world.

Tickets sold out immediately and many fans were left disappointed. The band announced further dates due to unprecedented demand and they yet add more.

With the band also potentially making at least one featival appearance next summer, they may decide to capitalise on the popularity and head back into the studio. Noel Gallagher is also going through an expensive divorce and may decide that the creation of a brand new album may help to fund his ongoing separation.
