Will Welcome to Wrexham win the ‘Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program’ at the Emmys?
Will Welcome to Wrexham win the ‘Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program’ at the Emmys?
Welcome to Wrexham has been appointment viewing for sports fans, yet it has also resonated with those who have very little interest in soccer.
Why is it so Popular?
There have been several documentaries based on soccer franchises over the last few years including Mission to Burnley and Sunderland Til I Die, however, the majority of these programs have appealed to largely British audiences, whereas Welcome to Wrexham has proved universally popular with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
The primary reason for this abnormal level of intrigue is that Wrexham FC are now owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny. Having completed the deal in 2021, the pair has overseen two promotions and they have also invested in the local community.
Before their arrival, the club had been struggling in the fifth tier of the English football pyramid and viewers have enjoyed seeing the Hollywood icons transforming the ailing club’s fortunes both on and off the pitch. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the documentary is Reynolds and McElhenny’s inexperience and lack of knowledge, leading to some inevitable drama and plot twists.
The documentary also puts the spotlight on members of the community and those who are working behind the scenes. Many of these workers and volunteers have been Wrexham supporters for several decades and they had a major part to play in keeping the club afloat prior to the change of ownership.
Several emotive subjects are also covered by the program including bereavement, divorce and autism.
