How Did the O’Neal and Sharpe Feud Start?
The feud between the two respected athletes began following Shaquille O’Neal’s interview with Nikola Jokic on Inside the NBA on May 8, 2024.
O’Neal told Jokic, who had recently won his third NBA MVP title within four years, that he believed the award should have been given to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from Oklahoma City Thunder.
Shaq said, “I don’t like to rain on people’s parades, but I’m not happy with this one. Congratulations to Joker. You’re the best big man in the league, but… I thought Shai Alexander deserved it.”
He also called Alexander a “stat stuffer” and sympathized with him missing out on the award, commenting he knows how it feels and said, “I thought I was robbed two or three times.”
Sharpe was quick to react to the interview, stating on his podcast The Nightcap that he suspects O’Neal is envious of Jokic, as he only received one MVP trophy during his NBA career.
The three-time Super Bowl champion said, “I think a part of Shaq, he might not ever admit this, but Shaq sees these guys win these MVPs and [is] a little envious. I understand that Shaq got four titles and he has three Finals MVPs, but Shaq knows deep down. We should be having the discussion — for G.O.A.T., Shaq’s name is never brought up in the discussion.”
Angered by the comments, O’Neal didn’t hesitate to call out Sharpe on Instagram, stating he hasn’t been “ranked in the top 10” of his “profession.”
However, the beef didn’t stop there, as he later released a diss track with lyrics slamming the NFL tight end, stating Sharpe is “way beneath me,” and said he had a “bulls*** podcast.”
It would be hard for Sharpe not to take the diss track personally, as O’Neal rapped, “Your whole demeanor is faker than new rapper beefy. You’re soft before you get fly, you’d rather tweet me. I was in three different cars when you was in three feet. All I see is dollar signs, they coming in 3-D. Make it hot, ain’t no way around my degrees. You are not in my spot, you are like a peewee.”
Will Sharpe Release a Diss Track?
Despite O’Neal’s obvious anger with Sharpe, it appears Shannon wants to put the beef to bed.
During an appearance on the red carpet at the Webby Awards, the NFL star told PEOPLE he has no problem with the Basketball Hall of Famer and wanted to move on from the feud.
Asked if he had anything else to say to O’Neal, Sharpe said, “I don’t have no problem with Shaq. He said what he said. I’m ready to move on.”
