Was Reese Witherspoon Asked to Appear in Cruel Intentions?
It was recently announced that Sarah Michelle Gellar will not reprise her iconic role as manipulative Kathryn Merteuil in the Cruel Intentions pilot. Instead, she will be replaced by Sarah Catherine Hook.
Sean Patrick Thomas is the only original cast member confirmed as a series regular, playing Professor Chadwick.
However, according to reports, Reese Witherspoon wasn’t approached to star in the show.
The Academy Award winner was named the highest-earning actress in the world in 2021, and the show might have been unable to afford her top salary.
Also, the 48-year-old actress is attached to various projects, as she currently plays Bradley Jackson on The Morning Show alongside Jennifer Aniston and Billy Crudup.
Plus, she is set to star in the upcoming comedy You’re Cordially Invited alongside Will Ferrell, which will be released on Prime Video on January 30, 2025.
Despite being busy with various projects, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Witherspoon popped up in the series at some point, which is sure to delight fans of the much-loved 90s flick.
When Will the Cruel Intentions Series Air?
Fans of the cult classic will not need to wait too long for the series reboot. No premiere date has officially been announced, but it is expected to air on Amazon’s Prime Video within the next 12 months.
Production reportedly began on the eight-episode series in Toronto, Canada, in June 2024.
In addition to a new cast, apart from Sean Patrick Thomas, the show will be set at an elite college in Washington, D.C., instead of a high school in New York City.
According to the show’s synopsis, the ruthless stepsiblings will continue pursuing power using manipulative tactics and even seduce the Vice President’s daughter.
The show will also feature Gossip Girl’s Savannah Lee Smith, Firefly Lane’s Khobe Clarke, and CSI: NY’s Claire Forlani, to name a few of the new cast members.
