The Controversy Surrounding Katy Perry’s Latest Singles
Katy Perry hasn’t struggled to dominate the charts during her career, as she’s released hit after hit, securing number-one singles like “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Part of Me,” and “Roar.”
However, her latest songs haven’t enjoyed the same success, as they have struggled in the charts.
The first song released from 143 “Woman’s World” has received many negative reviews, with The Guardian calling it a “dated attempt at writing a feminist anthem” and giving it one out of five stars.
Also, the singer was publicly criticized by media outlets and celebrities for working with Dr. Luke, a controversial music producer, on the single.
In 2018, singer Kesha filed a lawsuit against him for emotional and physical abuse, which the producer denied, and the case was settled out of court in 2023.
Despite other artists still working with him, it is Perry’s feminist anthem that may have encouraged other stars to speak out against her.
Kesha sent a short tweet of “lol” and actress Abigail Breslin criticized Perry’s decision to team up with Dr. Luke again, stating, “I’m just saying… working with known abusers in any industry just contributes to the narrative that men can do abhorrent s**t and get away with it.”
With poor reviews and much controversy surrounding the song, “Woman’s World” debuted at number 63 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Also, her second single, “Lifetimes,” didn’t perform any better, hitting number 145 on its release day before falling off the chart a day later.
The song hasn’t been free of controversy, either, as the Balearic Island’s environmental department stated it was launching an investigation into the song’s video shoot, as the production company didn’t obtain the correct authorization to film on its protected sand dunes.
As Katy Perry’s two singles have struggled to perform well in the charts, it will be interesting to see if 143 fares any better in the charts when released on September 20, 2024.
