Who are the Nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series?

Seasoned actresses and newcomers have earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at this year’s Emmy Awards.

The TV stars have many months to digest the nod, as the nominees were announced by actress Sheryl Lee Ralph and actor Tony Hale on July 17, 2014, and are as follows:

  • Jennifer Aniston (Alex Levy) – The Morning Show (Apple TV+)
  • Carrie Coon (Bertha Russell) – The Gilded Age (HBO)
  • Maya Erskine (Alana/Jane Smith) – & Mrs. Smith (Prime Video)
  • Anna Sawai (Toda Mariko) – Shōgun (FX)
  • Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II) – The Crown (Netflix)
  • Reese Witherspoon (Bradley Jackson) – The Morning Show (Apple TV+)

Which Actress is Likely to Win?

Anna Sawai appears to be the front-runner for winning the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series this year.

The 32-year-old Japanese actress shined in the hit FX show Shōgun, which has earned a total of 25 nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.

In addition to offering an incredible performance as Toda Mariko, it might be (Spoiler Alert) the first and last time members can vote for her as Lady Mariko.

The breakout star will go up against experienced actresses Jennifer Aniston, who won Lead Actress in a Comedy in 2002, and Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon, and both offered excellent performances in The Morning Show.

Of course, it would be foolish to rule out Imelda Staunton, who gave an unforgettable portrayal as Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown.

Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, who played younger versions of the monarch, each received the Outstanding Lead Actress Award for their portrayals in 2018 and 2021, and history could repeat itself.

Bear in mind that The Crown received the award for Outstanding Drama Series in 2021, unlike The Morning Show, which could suggest the TV Academy will favor the show and its actresses more.
