Will The Mummy 4 Begin Filming in 2024?
The summer blockbuster The Mummy from 1999 was one of Brendan Fraser’s most famous roles. It got people around the world reinterested in Egypt and the old-fashioned horror films of the same name from the 1930s.
Returning for the follow-up in 2001 and then the third instalment in 2008, Fraser vanished from starring in Hollywood pictures for a time. This was following accusations of sexual assault from a producer towards him, leading him to need to have the space to seek out help. So, it stands to reason that he would have stepped back from making movies for a while to recover.
However, his career has been on something of an upswing since he won the Oscar for the Whale in 2023. This has fueled speculation that The Mummy franchise is going to be reinvigorated, with The Mummy 4 being pursued by director Stephen Sommers.
Is it really that cut and dry? Has there been any hints that this is going to occur? Read on to find out more about the potential for The Mummy 4 being released, as well as its filming beginning in 2024.

Fraser and The Mummy
With his confidence in his acting ability and his psychological well-being back on track, Brendan Fraser has indeed stated that he would be willing to return for a long-delayed fourth Mummy franchise entry. Great news, but this in itself is not enough to warrant a movie!
It should also be noted that Stephen Sommers was reported to be thrilled at the return of Fraser to Hollywood and has stated that he is keen to work with Brendan again. So far, Sommers has been a bit secretive of any studios looking to make The Mummy 4 happen.
The Franchise So Far
It is also worth considering if pursuing another sequel to The Mummy franchise for both Summers and Fraser is a good idea.
The Mummy 1 had takings of $418 million at the global box office, with the Mummy Returns having a similar $435 million. Skipping over the Scorpion King due to the CGI (oh dear! If you haven’t seen it, look it up!), the Mummy 3, was the lowest-grossing film of the trilogy, attracting $405 million worldwide. Not bad, but not great! Many believe this was due to Rachel Weisz not taking part as Evelyn, which was a great role for her and the movie.
Consider that the costs of making these films were vast. The 2008 movie had a production cost of over $175 million, meaning that the worldwide gross was not that much higher. Yes, it would be great to see the resurgence of O’Connell, played by Fraser, but is it worth it for the previous takings?
