Who are the Previous Winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year?
England goalkeeper Mary Earps was the 2023 recipient of the award following her exploits at the Women’s World Cup. She is the second consecutive footballer to be awarded the gong, following in the footsteps of her teammate Beth Mead.
Young tennis star Emma Raducanu was victorious in 2021 whereas Lewis Hamilton picked up the award for a second time in 2020. Ben Stokes, Geraint Thomas and Mo Farah are all previous winners within the last decade.
Across the last ten years, the winners have come from the world of Cycling, Football, Formula 1, Athletics, Tennis and Cricket. Prior to that, jockey Tony (AP) McCoy came out on top whereas Joe Calzaghe was the last boxer to win the award back in 2007.
Who are the Nominees in 2024?
Darts prodigy Luke Littler is the early favourite to pick up this year’s award. The 17-year old is the current Premier League Darts Champion and burst onto the scene at the PDC World Darts Championship at the end of 2023. He is the youngest-ever player to win a major tournament and was also the youngest-ever to hit a televised nine-dart finish.
Mark Cavendish was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year back in 2011 and the Isle of Man-born cyclist has enjoyed a bit of resurgence in 2024. In July, Cavendish broke the all-time record for the greatest number of Tour de France stage wins having triumphed on Stage 5 in Saint-Vulbas.
800m star Keely Hodgkinson is the third favourite in the betting and a lot may depend on how she performs in Paris later this summer. She beat world champion Mary Moraa at the Diamond League meeting earlier this year and she’ll be hoping to repeat the trick in the French capital.
Jude Bellingham may not have been able to guide the Three Lions to victory this summer, yet the talented midfielder is still high on the list.
Pole Vaulter Molly Caudery has risen to fame quite quickly over the last twelve months. She claimed the world indoor gold earlier this year and leads the world in terms of height cleared this year (4.92)
Katerina Johnson-Thompson is the current world champion when it comes to the Heptathlon and if she can avoid injury and claim gold this summer, she has a great chance of making the top three.
