What will be the Outcome of Manchester City’s Enquiry?
Premier League champions Manchester City were hit with 115 charges for breaching profit and sustainability rules, yet the 2022-23 treble winners are still waiting to find out their fate. Unlikes fellow top flight sides Nottingham Forest and Everton, Pep Guardiola’s men haven’t been deducted any points and this unprecendented delay has left fans wondering if the club will ever face the consequences of their overspending.
What are the Charges?
Of the 115 charges levelled at the eight-time champions, 35 of them relate to the club’s failure to co-operate with the Premier League. The rest of the charges date all the way back to 2009 and they include failure to provide the authorities with accurate details of player and manager payments and also failure to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules.
The majority of these allegations were obtained via leaked material from German newspaper Der Spiegel, although the club have vehemently protested against them stating that the information was illegally sourced.
The accusations also included details of fabricated sponsorship details which were created by owner Sheikh Mansour and players being given larger salaries than was previously documented in the accounts.
The club have been accused of ‘not acting in good faith’ and their lack of compliance could come back to haunt them.

How likely are they to be Punished?
Nobody knows. Although the breaches weren’t as severe, Everton were deducted eight points during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign whereas Nottingham Forest were hit with a four point deduction in March 2024.
Rumours suggest that Manchester City’s hearing date will take place in late 2024 and if they are to follow in the footsteps of their fellow Premier League sides, they aren’t likely to discover their fate until at least 2025.
City have previously overturned a two-year ban from UEFA competitions and having hired specialist lawyers to work on the case, the club will feel confident of being able to appeal any sanctions that may come their way.
What will be their Punishment?
Again, this is currently unclear. Points deductions could be implemented and this could potentially derail their quest for a third successive Premier League title.
The liklihood is that they will be fined heavily for their misdemeanours, yet this may not even scratch the surface. Man City’s owners have exceptionally deep pockets and they are unlikely to be hit hard by financial penalisation.
There have been some rumours about the club being potentially expelled from the English top flight whereas others have spoken about the possibilty of them having their titles revoked. Neither of these scenarios seem likely.
