On July 26th 2024, the opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics will take place at the Jardins du Trocadero Seine River in Paris. There has been plenty of discussion surrounding the artistic content of this much-anticipated event and with around 300,000 spectators in attendance, it is widely expected to be an exciting and absorbing spectacle.
10,500 participating athletes will march into the venue proudly representing their nations before French president Emmanuel Macron will formally open proceedings.
When are the 2024 Olympics?
Paris 2024 will get underway on July 26th 2024 and will run until August 11th. Across this period, there will 329 different events taking place across 32 different sports with the majority of these being televised. 17 French cities will be hosting events, although the central hub will remain in the French capital.

Previous Olympic Ceremonies
The Tokyo Olympics were one of the hottest on record with temperatures fluctuating between 29 and 34 degrees celcius. Climate change was cited as one of the reasons for the often unbearable climate and many athletes struggled with the humidity (almost 50%) throughout the games.
The average temperature at the 2016 Rio Olympics was similar, however, the 2012 London Olympics was far lower – averaging around 20 degrees.
Prior to Tokyo, the hottest games on record was Athens where temperatures peaked at 34.2 degrees. Sydney was at the lower end of the spectrum with temperatures struggling to reach 23 degrees.
Three consecutive Olympics between 1984 and 1992 (LA, Seoul and Barcelona) peaked at somewhere between 25 and 28 degrees.
What is the Forecast for Paris 2024?
August is always the hottest month across Northern Europe and Paris is no exception. The average daily temperature at this time of the year can vary between 15 and 22 degrees with a relative humidity of around 66%.
In 2022, Paris witnessed a summer heatwave with similar conditions also taking place in 2019. Temperatures exceeded 40 degrees last year and although it isn’t expected to reach those heights this time around, it is still predicted to be fairly sweltering.
In the days preceding the opening ceremony, temperatures are fairly consistent. Each of the five days leading up to Paris 2024, the temperatures sit between 23 and 25 degrees. This is expected to continue throughout the opening weekend.
