Who is Takeru Kobayashi?
Takeru Kobayashi is well-regarded for popularizing the sport of competitive eating and has won Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest six times.
The godfather of competitive eating kickstarted his career in 2000, eating 16 bowls of ramen in one hour in the TV Champion Gluttony Championship final.
Since then, Kobayashi has won many competitive eating contests, including the 2005 Alka-Seltzer US Open of Competitive Eating tournament and Gringo Bandito Taco Challenge.
Who is Joey Chestnut?
When Joey Chestnut isn’t enjoying his career as a construction engineer, he’s likely training for or participating in a competitive eating challenge.
The 40-year-old American kickstarted his competitive eating career at a deep-fried asparagus eating championship in 2005, beating Rich LeFevre, a high-ranked competitive eater.
The same year, he placed third behind Takeru Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, and he set a world record at the Arizona State Fair for eating an incredible 32 grilled cheese sandwiches in as little as 10 minutes.
He’s now a 16-time hot dog-eating champion and has been ranked number one in the world by Major League Eating.
The Rivalry Between Chestnut and Kobayashi
Chestnut and Kobayashi have gone head-to-head many times throughout their competitive eating careers.
For instance, after losing to Kobayashi in 2005 and 2006, Chestnut got his revenge by defeating the six-time champion at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2007, earning the world record for eating 66 hot dogs and buns within 12 minutes.
Chestnut soon dominated the popular annual contest, earning eight consecutive wins from 2007 to 2014. After losing to Matt Stonie in 2015, he reclaimed the title from 2016 to 2023.
However, Chestnut lost to Kobayashi at the World Hamburger Eating Championship in 2009, eating 81 to Takeru’s 93.
