Who Will the Public Pick for the Summer Olympics 2032 Mascot?

The Australian public will decide the mascot for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. Many options are available, including the dingo, emu, kookaburra, possum, kangaroo, platypus, and even a lifeguard.

However, according to Cameron Costella, who is on the Queensland Tourism Industry Council, the Australian white ibis and koala are clear frontrunners.

As the koala is an endangered species, many believe turning it into a mascot will provide the animal with the global attention it needs to save it from extinction, as it has a dwindling population.

Costello commented, “We’re at a really critical point in time. In 2032 and prior to that, the eyes of the world are going to be upon us. It’s an opportunity for us to look at how we can use the momentum of the Olympics to actually get our endangered species back to the right place they should be.”

But What about the White Ibis?

Despite many believing the koala is a natural choice, the Australian white ibis seems to be a top contender among Australians.

Often referred to as a “Bin Chicken” by Australians due to its scavenging behavior, the animal could soon catch the attention of the world.

Stirling Hinchliffe, Queensland Sports Minister, believes the ibis is a great choice, stating, “As a member for Sandgate, I’ve got a quiet sort of soft touch for the idea that the ibis might play a role. And I know there’s plenty of Queenslanders who think that’s something that might be appropriate as well.”

The ibis might be a different but worthy choice for the world-famous sporting event, as Matilda the Kangaroo was the 1982 Commonwealth Games mascot in Brisbane, and Borobi the Koala became the mascot for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
