TikTok to be Banned in the USA By the End of 2024
Since 2016, TikTok has allowed its members to watch trending videos at the click of a button. The short-form video platform allows users to submit videos that are three seconds to 60 minutes long, which will become instantly accessible to its estimated 1 billion monthly active users.
Despite being a popular platform among Gen Zers worldwide, including those in the United States, TikTok might disappear from US smartphones soon.Â
A new US bill could result in a nationwide ban on TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, which is likely to upset many of its users.

So, how likely is it that TikTok will be banned in the USA by the end of 2024? Keep reading to learn all the details.
Why Might TikTok Be Banned in the US?
In April 2024, Congress passed a bill, signed by President Joe Biden, to end Chinese ownership in the country.
As a result, ByteDance, the Chinese development company behind TikTok, has nine months to sell its stake in the US version of the platform (but could receive a three-month extension to finalize a potential deal), or the country will block the social media app nationwide.
If ByteDance fails to find a new owner, TikTok will be banned in the United States in January 2025 at the earliest.
How Many Americans Use TikTok Each Month?
If TikTok is banned, it will likely disappoint people up and down the country, as a reported 170 million Americans use the app.
The social media platform will be banned on the country’s web hosting services, and it will no longer be available to download from various app stores, such as Apple and Google.
However, following the ban, many users might be tempted to download a VPN to bypass the geo-restrictions and watch content on the app.
Have Other Countries Banned TikTok?
The United States will not be the first country to ban TikTok. The short-form video platform has experienced much scrutiny in recent years due to misinformation, data privacy violations, offensive content, mental health content, and a suspected role in the Israel-Hamas war.
For the above reasons, many countries have taken steps to ban, fine, or restrict TikTok, including Australia, Canada, Belgium, India, Afghanistan, The Netherlands, and Denmark.
As many countries have already banned TikTok, it would be no surprise if the United States follows suit in January 2025.
