In 2023, it was announced Manchester City would face 115 Premier League charges for potentially breaking financial fair play rules over a nine-year period.

According to the Premier League, the club didn’t provide them with accurate financial information.

The club strongly denies allegations of financial irregularities, which reportedly started in 2009 and continued until 2018.

However, not all the alleged breaches are related to financial irregularities, as thirty-five of the charges are reportedly due to Manchester City’s uncooperating with the Premier League investigation from 2018 to February 2023.

How Could Manchester City Be Punished?

Time will tell if and how Manchester City will be punished if found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial fair play rules. The independent commission has limitless powers, and various punishments are possible.

For example, there is a possibility Manchester City could be kicked out of the Premier League. Like other big clubs, such as Barcelona and Manchester United, they could receive a large fine from UEFA for the breaches.

Also, they could have points deducted at a specific period, such as the start of a new football season, similar to Everton and Nottingham Forest.

As Manchester City won three Premier League trophies from 2009 to 2018, they might be stripped of the titles.

However, the club insists it is innocent and is taking legal action against the Premier League to prove it.

How Long Will the Investigation Be?

The investigation timeline is currently unknown, but various reports believe a hearing date could take place in autumn 2024, which may result in a decision by summer 2025.

Manchester City has proven in the past that it isn’t afraid to fight, as the club won a similar case with UEFA in 2020, overturning a two-year ban from European club competitions.

Can Manchester City Appeal If Found Guilty?

Manchester City or the Premier League will have a right to appeal depending on the judgement, but they cannot take it to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

They can launch an appeal and receive a fresh hearing to overturn the verdict. If they choose to appeal, Murray Rosen KC from the independent commission will appoint six new members to the appeal panel.
